At the service of the Aeolian Islands, the key drivers of the energy transformation

In order to facilitate the transition process to sustainable energy in the smaller islands, the European Commission launched in 2018 the Clean Energy for EU Islands project: a path that promotes self-sufficiency, sustainability and employment development.

Since March 7, 2019 the island of Salina, in the Aeolian Islands archipelago, has been chosen as one of the first 6 pilot islands in Europe: an important recognition for Sicily and Italy as a whole.

A success that comes after six years since the signing of the “Pact of Islands” in 2013 by the three Municipal Administrations of the island (Malfa, Santa Marina di Salina and Leni) and the drawing up of energy and CO2 emissions budgets, as well as the Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs).

Salina, today, is the key driver of the change and the rest of the archipelago will follow the example: the drafting of the Plan for the energy transition of the island will dictate the basis for future interventions in the islands involved in the project from now until 2050.

The Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), the Region of Sicily and the European Clean Energy Secretariat for EU Islands will support the activities. It is an ambitious project that will involve, by summer 2020, another 20 islands of the Union, including Favignana and Pantelleria.

In this important phase of energy transition, LPG plays an important role: a valid alternative to diesel and BTZ both in terms of environmental sustainability and supply, in line with the limitations imposed by the European Union.

ButanGas is proud to put at the service of the Aeolian Islands over 70 years of experience through a network of agents already present on the territory to ensure an efficient and safe service in full respect of the environment and actively contribute to the development of the European Clean Energy for Eu Islands programme.
